MALONE — John Castner has pleaded not guilty to murdering fellow Duane resident David Carpin.

Castner’s public defender entered the plea for him in Franklin County Court this morning.

Mr. Carpin’s body was unearthed from a property owned by Castner on Old Meacham Road in the town of Duane in April. State Police documents say Mr. Carpin, 61, was shot and killed Nov. 28, 2017.

On April 19, Castner was charged with second-degree murder and criminal possession of a weapon.

A grand jury indictment read in court this morning included the murder charge, along with four counts of second-degree criminal possession of a weapon and one count each of tampering with physical evidence and concealing a human corpse.

Earlier, State Police said Castner admitted killing Mr. Carpin, who died of a gunshot wound to the chest, according to autopsy reports.

Castner sat somewhat slumped in the courtroom.

Bail was set at $500,000 cash or $1 million bond. Castner had been jailed without bail since his arrest.
